Popular Crime Novels

True crime novels can be terrifying and unsettling to some readers. Just the simple fact of knowing these crimes have taken place can be disturbing. Other readers are very interested in true crimes which have really happened and are unaffected by reading them.

There are several popular true crime novels available to spark the interest of many readers. Here are a few.

  • The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule

Novelist Ann Rule worked with Ted Bundy at a suicide hotline in the 1970s. They soon became friends, which gave Ann an insight into the serial killer’s life and inner psyche. Ted Bundy was a notorious serial killer who confessed to murdering 30 women. However, investigators believe there could be several more murders he is responsible for. Ann knew Ted personally and was able to capture the real-life story during his conviction, trial and execution. An excellent read.

  • My Dark Places by James Ellroy

This is a novel written by James Ellroy. It describes the impact of his murdered mother. James was only ten years old. The incident had a major effect on James. In later years he led a life of drug and alcohol use. His mother’s murder remains unsolved.

  • I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara

This intense read is about the Golden State Killer. Michelle McNamara was a true crime journalist who joined the search for the serial rapist and killer in the State of California. It took 40 years to find him and eventually DNA from his great, great, great grandparents matched the DNA from a crime scene. The Golden State Killer was known to be responsible for at least 12 murders and more than 50 rapes.

  • In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

This novel describes the horrific true crime of four members of the Clutter family, who were shot to death in their home. This took place in Kansas in 1959. The author’s ability to capture every detail of the crime is true to life. Action packed with investigators hunting the killers and conducting interviews with people who knew both the victims and killers.

  • Midnight in Mexico by Alfredo Corchado

This fascinating read is about a reporter, Alfredo Corchado, who became an international correspondent in Mexico. He worked for the Dallas Morning News. As a reporter, he followed the country’s economy but also uncovered the cartel’s corruption with the government. Alfredo uncovered several murders which the cartels were responsible for and then ironically became a target himself. He had 24 hours to save his own life.
